Founded in 2012, the Institute of Sustainable Biotechnology aims to create a hub for research, education, and innovation in biotechnology with a sustainability focus. By connecting academic research with real-world applications, we foster a culture of learning that encourages students and faculty to think critically and act responsibly. It provides a unique enquiry-based learning opportunity for biosciences students and faculty from the AAS in Agricultural Technology, AAS in Biotechnology, BS in Biotechnology, BS in Biology, MS in Biotechnology, and PhD in International Biotechnology.

The Institute of Sustainable Biotechnology building was officially inaugurated in early 2014, with the presence of distinguished academic and business leaders. Located adjacent to the Inter American University of Puerto Rico, Barranquitas Campus, the Institute features state-of-the-art facilities, including two research and development laboratories, a main laboratory, computer centers, and a modern amphitheater. Its eco-friendly design incorporates renewable energy sources such as solar panels, which supply the electricity needed to power the building. Additionally, a rainwater collection and pumping system provides sustainable water use throughout its facilities. These innovations position the Institute of Sustainable Biotechnology as one of the most modern and environmentally conscious research centers in Puerto Rico’s central region.
